JPEG 2000 gains market shares, goes for Digital Cinema
The Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) is a working group of ISO, the International Organisation for Standardization, (ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29/WG1), responsible for the popular JPEG Imaging Standard and, more recently, the JPEG 2000 family of imaging standards. This group meets three times a year, in Europe, North America and Asia. The latest meeting was held last week in Redmond, Washington, hosted by the US National Standards Organisation, with delegates from 13 countries.
At the meeting, it was announced that ISO JTC1 SC24 Standards Committee has adopted JPEG 2000 as the compression algorithm for the NATO file format. Digital Cinema Initiatives also announced that it has selected JPEG 2000 as the compression method for their specification as the standard to use in Digital Cinema applications.
"We are happy with the way JPEG 2000 is getting adopted by various standards groups and organizations. The recent decision of Digital Cinema Initiatives is definitely good news",
said Dr. Daniel Lee of Yahoo! Inc., Convener of the JPEG Group.
A call for expression of interest was issued for organizations to take up the responsibility as the Registration Authority to administer the collection, registration and dissemination of parameters used in JPEG 2000 standards - JPSEC (security), JPWL (wireless applications), JPIP (API and interactive tools).
A call for contribution was issued on a new work item called JPSearch (Still Image Search). This new work item deals with standardization of metadata and technologies associated with searching still image libraries and databases in the Internet and document management applications.
The following presentations were made at the plenary session on the latest developments in JPEG 2000 :
- OpenJPEG Group activities by Mr. Antonin Descampe from UCL (Belgium)
- Digital Cinema briefing to JPEG 2000 by Mr. Walt Ordway from DCI (USA)
The report on the JPEG web site (http://www.jpeg.org) showed high activity figures, the site is now open for sponsoring to all companies involved in developments around JPEG.
The next 34th JPEG Meeting will be hosted by the Australian National Body in Noosaville, Queensland, Australia, November 8 - 12, 2004.
