en A new site design was launched ahead of schedule in record time to show off the JPEG committee's new web site.
Although planned for an autumn release, the new site was created in a few days, previewing Elysium's new Xalter technology.
The site architecture supports multiple languages ( hopefully at least nine will be supported shortly, including Japanese), a new forum system based on the tried and trusted Open Source PHPBB for now, and true wysiwyg editing in all languages.
Its launch was decided on as site accesses hit record levels. Richard Clark, JPEG's webmaster stated 'The original site was only intended as a document repository for the committee. The huge increase in site traffic, coupled with our own plans and a European R&D project to develop JPEG 2000 ( 2KAN ) made a mockery of the existing timescales for launch, so we took the decision to open up the new architecture way ahead of schedule.'
The site was crafted by Elysium using an all Open Source platform - Linux, Apache, and PHP as the core. Hopefully it will soon be 'GIF-free'....
Another reason of course was that the new JPEG historical archive and bibliography deserved a better home!
